What Is the NSW OC Test?
The NSW Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is a selective exam sat by Year 4 students who wish to enter a government Opportunity Class in Year 5. OC classes are selective programs within mainstream primary schools, offering an academically enriched curriculum for high-potential students. Places are highly competitive — with hundreds of students across Sydney vying for a limited number of spots at each school.
The test assesses three key areas: mathematical reasoning, thinking skills (abstract and general reasoning) and reading comprehension. Strong performance in all three domains is needed for a competitive score. The earlier preparation begins, the better — most successful families start at least two school terms in advance.
