Understanding the NSW Selective School Placement Test
The NSW Selective High School Placement Test is sat by students in Year 6 for entry into Year 7 at a selective school. The test assesses four areas: reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills (general ability) and writing. Places at Sydney's top selective schools — James Ruse, North Sydney Boys and Girls, Sydney Boys and Girls, Baulkham Hills and others — are among the most sought-after in Australian education. Competition is genuinely fierce.
What many parents don't fully appreciate is that the selective test doesn't just assess what students have already learned — it assesses how they think. Students who have been specifically prepared for the style of questions, the timing requirements and the cognitive strategies required will consistently outperform equally intelligent students who haven't been prepared. Preparation genuinely matters.
🏆 Alchemy's selective school tutors have helped hundreds of Sydney students gain entry to their first-choice selective school. The difference between a student who gets in and one who just misses out is almost always preparation — not innate ability.

When to Start Selective School Preparation
The most successful outcomes come from students who begin preparation 12–18 months before the test date. This gives enough time to build the foundational skills, develop familiarity with the question styles, complete extensive practice papers and address any weaknesses thoroughly before the real thing. Starting in Year 5 for the Year 6 test is ideal — though students who begin preparation in early Year 6 can and do still achieve strong results with intensive, focused tutoring.
For the OC Test (held in Year 4 for entry into Year 5 OC classes), we recommend beginning preparation no later than Year 3, with Year 2 start being ideal for the most competitive placements.
Our Selective School Tutors
All of Alchemy's selective school tutors are themselves graduates of NSW selective schools or high achievers from academically competitive environments. They understand the test deeply — not just academically but from lived experience. They know what it feels like to sit that test, what strategies work under time pressure, and what markers are looking for in the writing component.
Beyond their expertise, our selective school tutors are also exceptional at working with children in the Year 4–6 age group — patient, encouraging, and skilled at making preparation feel engaging rather than stressful. We want your child to walk into the test feeling genuinely prepared and confident, not anxious.
